The New England Whalers joined the ) as one of the league's original teams. They won the inaugural Avco Cup championship in their first season which would end up being their only championship. The team moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1974 and continued to be one of the most successful teams in the WHA, never missing the playoffs. They were included in the 1979 merger with the established league, but low attendance and the inability to get a new arena built led to the Whalers demise. In 1997, the team moved and was renamed. Hall of famers who played for the Whalers over the years included, Paul Coffey, Ron Francis, Gordie Howe, Mark Howe, Bobby Hull, Dave Keon, Chris Pronger, and Brendan Shanahan
