The Virginia Squires were the result of the moving to Virginia for the 1970 season. They started in 1967 as the , charter members of the . Rick Barry was the star in Washington and appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated in a Squires uniform, but was traded before ever playing a game. Even without Barry, the Squires would have three hall of fame players in addition to their coach Zelmo Beaty. The Squires were mainly based in Norfolk, however they played home games in a number of arenas around Virginia. The team struggled financially and after trading away its star played eventually folded in 1976, just ahead of the merger with the established league.
