The Memphis franchise in the American Basketball Association (ABA)  began as the New Orleans Buccaneers in 1967, the leagues first year. In 1970, they became the Memphis Pros. They were sold to Charles O. Finley, owner of the baseball's A's and hockey's . He changed the name to Tams (or Tennessee Arkansas Mississippi). It soon became clear Finley had little interest in the team. Mike Storen resigned as ABA commissioner to take over the team and recruited new co-owners including Isaac Hayes. The changed the team names once again, this time to the Memphis Sounds.
