Cincinnati had been trying to get a team in the National Hockey League (NHL) for several years starting in the late 1960s when the league was starting to expand beyond the so-called Original Six. By the early 1970s, local businessmen Brian Heekin and Bill DeWitt were spearheading the effort. Despite plans to build a state-of-the-art arena, though, the NHL was skittish on Cincinnati. Instead, Heekin and DeWitt accepted an invitation to join the rival . Their brand new arena complete, the Stingers hit the ice in 1975. In a league with a variety of memorable logos, the crest of the Cincinnati Stingers still stands out. The winged bumblebee that curves into a recognizable letter "C" is an enduring symbol of Cincinnati's only major league hockey franchise, and recognized by hockey fans worldwide. Even though they had better attendance than fellow WHA squad the , and played in one of the top hockey arenas in the country, the Stingers were not included in the NHL/WHA merger in 1979. The team reorganized and joined the but folded after 33 games.
